Getting the Attention of Publishers and Event Planners

If you are an aspiring author or speaker, it's important to build a strong platform with great content and a wide audience of followers before pitching your book proposal (or completed book!) to an agent (or publisher) or going after paid speaking gigs.

One way to achieve this is with interviews on various media platforms.

When my private consulting client Liz Bywater was writing her book Slow Down to Speed Up, she had a lot of credentials like a PhD in Psychology, a Cornell undergraduate degree, a successful psychology practice, a long list of Fortune 50 executives who she has coached on leadership, and a decent social media presence on LinkedIn and Twitter.

She was a respected expert among her peers, but she didn’t have a large online following or any current content other than her own blog and social media posts.

We set a goal to get her featured in the media on multiple platforms at once for bigger impact.

I reached out to my connections and landed her interviews with:

  • podcaster Gene Hammett (whose show Leaders in the Trenches has downloads averaging 30,000 listeners),

  • radio host Marilyn Russell (whose show Remarkable Women can be heard on 98.1 WOGL),

  • Blog Talk Radio host Christy Demetrakis (whose show Faith to Conquer Fear was heard across the country),

  • radio host Brad Segall (whose show Philadelphia Agenda can be heard weekly on CBS Radio),

  • social media livestream shows, and

  • a national magazine with millions of readers.

The result of this was:

  • greater visibility,

  • stronger credibility,

  • more attention from book agents and publishers,

  • paid speaking engagements, and

  • bigger media opportunities (she now contributes to the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Fast Company and other publications).

There are many platforms where you can be interviewed to share your expertise:

  • Radio

  • Blogs

  • Podcasts

  • Magazines

  • Newspapers (digital)

  • Livestream Video

  • inside an expert’s paid program

  • YouTube

  • TV

A few tips to increase your visibility:

  • Build your platform as an expert so that your pitches are successful and more doors open for you.

  • Start with local, smaller media and build up to regional and then national.

  • Do a media blitz so you are seen everywhere at once.

  • Once you land media coverage:

    • display the logos of the media outlet on your website,

    • send links to your interviews to your email list,

    • include a sentence to your email signature like "as seen & heard on xyz", and

    • add the interviews to your LinkedIn profile.
